It's still a little early to go into full-on holiday movie mode, though there will be plenty of that before this month is out, so my pick to start your December is the film Kitty Foyle. Starring Ginger Rogers, this film is based on a novel of the same name (which I also recommend). Watch Rogers in a serious role as she plays a hard-working, white-collar girl from Pennsylvania. She is a strong independent woman who falls in love with a young socialite, to the horror of his family. Watch her struggle with social hierarchy, divorce, failed pregnancy and learning to stand on her own two feet. This is a serious film with a great heart and themes beyond the year (1940) it was released in. It won an Oscar and was nominated for four more. Ginger won't sing or dance, but she will still steal your heart.
