Filled with iconic scenes and witty understatements, North by Northwest is my favorite film by Alfred Hitchcock. The movie casts Cary Grant as our Byronic hero; an ad man (long before the time of Mad Men) who gets mistaken as a spy. The blunder leads to a "slight case of abuction," murder, and a cross-country chase that leaves Grant (and viewers) breathless. It quickly becomes clear that no one is trustworthy and no place is safe, but like every good Hitchcock the composition and colors of every shot are as vital as the plot.
