I tend to be drawn to a lot of statement clothes, or even just dresses and then will end up in a quandary on what to pair with a certain skirt or under a pinafore because I don't have enough basics! So this chemise has been a perfect addition to my closet because of how many things I can style it with. The term chemise is an old one and this chemise is inspired by that classic undergarment women would have worn historically under their dresses--they're sort of like slips in a way worn to help keep your clothes clean longer. Chemises could also be worn in ways so that parts of them would peek through and later the "chemise a la reine" was made popular in the 1780s by Marie Antoinette, although it was considered a bit shocking at the time! This modern chemise has the same simple lines of the classic pieces that inspired it and can be worn as your garment rather than underneath. I love it because it adds a bit of a vintage feeling to whatever you pair it with, while not being a statement piece, so it allows whatever you pair it with to take center stage as it were. Most recently I found it the perfect pairing piece for the Hollyhock skirt from my capsule collection with Nour & the Merchant. The Hollyhock skirt can be worn with a variety of blouses, but I love it most with something simple and romantic. Did you know the Hollyhock skirt is also available in over a dozen different shades of linen and the embroidery can be customised? Pictured here is the coral linen version with the elf dagger embroidery.
